Basic coastal safety reminders

  • Never turn your back on the ocean; sneaker waves can reach well above the normal wash line.
  • Check the tide table before going out and know when the tide turns. Rocks and tide pools can be cut off by a rising tide.
  • Wear shoes with good traction and avoid wet, algae-covered rocks.
  • Go with a partner and tell someone your plan and expected return time.
  • Cold water is dangerous even for strong swimmers. Avoid entering the water in cold conditions.
  • Check warnings and the marine forecast right before you leave. Conditions can change quickly, and fog can cut visibility.
